What is Retirement Living?
A Retirement Living development usually offers security, companionship and purpose-built accommodation for people over 55.
The range of Retirement Living properties is vast, with many locations across the UK. Whether it’s a retirement village nestled somewhere in the countryside or a modern apartment in the heart of a bustling city, there are plenty of options.
Typically, though not always, this type of retirement property is bought on a leasehold agreement, though some retirement housing developers do rent their apartments, cottages and bungalows.
A focus on lifestyle and community
Facilities vary depending on your budget, where you want to live, your needs and the Retirement Living provider but you can expect thoughtful features that have been added to make life easier. Some developments, for example, have waist-height ovens, raised electric power sockets and slip-resistant flooring in the bathroom(s).
Many retirement communities allow pets to move in too and often, the site features a maintained garden and apartments with balconies. While fantastic for cats and dogs, shared gardens and patios are also a perfect place for socialising in summer. It’s not uncommon for events to be held throughout the year either indoors or outdoors.
A balance of privacy and community can be found with Retirement Living, with individual, purpose-built apartments and shared spaces like a social lounge, that encourage people to talk and take part in group activities.
Boutique-style guest suites for family and friends who want to visit can also be found at many Retirement Living complexes. Complimentary stays can also be requested at some sites if you would like to experience Retirement Living for yourself ahead of making a decision.
Retirement Living with additional assistance
Some Retirement Living providers such asMcCarthy StoneandAudley Villagesprovide additional services to help residents live a more independent and enjoyable lifestyle.
These services may or may not be chargeable, so always ask the Retirement Living provider.
Additional services might include but are not limited to:
- Domestic support such as cleaning, laundry and linen changing
- Meal planning and preparation
- Personal support including bathing, drying hair and shaving
- Help with medication
- Shopping for and putting away food
- Assistance in getting to appointments or social activities
