Rankings for the Top20 news websites in May were released last week. news.com.au stays No1 (just!) on 12.69m, with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News on 12.65m.Guardian Australia is back up to 6th biggest news website in Australia with 7.7m readers in May, overtaking The Sydney Morning Herald with 7.3m readers. In April DailyTele was +1m readers to storm into 10th. It was a very big Sydney news month (Bondi Junction & church stabbings) and that massive audience growth then dropped in May. DailyTele lost -1.2m readers & dropped to 19th. SMH also lost a massive -1m readers. The Top10 publishers to gain audience in May were news.com.au, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia News and The Age . Nine, Daily Mail, Guardian Australia, SMH and Yahoo all lost audience on the previous month.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Exciting day. The Australian edition of the 2024 Digital News Report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism is out now. Explore it here: https://lnkd.in/gKYDnfAmTrust in news fell -3% to 40% and, while 'news avoidance' remains high at 68%, Australians who accessed news more than once a day rose +3% to 51%.Since 2019 there's been a +13% increase in people who say they're worn out by the volume of news. That news fatigue is prevalent among light news consumers and social media news users. And that's a challenge to solve for reaching younger people, because while 49% of Australians use social media to access news (+4%), 60% of GenZ rely on social media as their main news source. That's up a huge +17% on the 2023 report.So, so, so much more in the full 168-page report, including "a special lift-out featuring ten of the most interesting trends to emerge in news consumption and attitudes", compiled to mark the occasion of the 10th edition of DNR: Australia. It's an #SEO strategy, I'll give them that. Apparently doesn't matter if you don't have a wife (or a husband, girlfriend or boyfriend!) eg:#Euro2024: Who is Cole Palmer's wife?But it's also a #Discover and #AppleNews strategy… I had FOUR of them pushed to me in the For You section of AppleNews, which only holds 10-11 stories.
